Fascinating facts - did you know?
Ambergris, historically used as a fixative in perfumes or as a medicine, is a solid waxy substance originating in the intestines of sperm whales. The whales regurgitate it and exposure to the sun, seawater and air causes it to harden and fade to a pale colour. It floats and it washed ashore around the Asian and American costlines. It is rarely used now due to trade restrictions, and it is illegal to sell it is Australia.
