Australian Historic Records Register

Record & register of heritage materials in private hands, describes shipboard accounts of voyages to colonial Australia, eye-witness reports of Eureka uprising, personal diaries of a wide variety of Australians, photographic collections, and business records of companies. Entries include date and summary of contents, indication of its extent, and account of context in which it was created. Has name, place and subject index.

Bailliere's Victorian Post Office directory 1868-1881

Names, residences and occupations of inhabitants of Victoria, arranged both alphabetically and according to locations with cross references. Additional information on government institutions, public instrumentalities and municipalities. Provides a tool for tracing the movements and activities of individuals and groups.

Ballarat Cemetery Registers

Includes the old and new cemeteries and the crematorium, provides verification of a death date. Headstone can include cause of death and other information. Valuable for pre-1850 deaths.

Biographical index of the La Trobe Library

Its aim is to collect biographical information on Victorians, Australians and others who have relevance to Australia. Arranged alphabetically by surname, consists of about 160,000 catalogue cards, references to archival and current Melbourne newspapers, biographical books and other sources.

British army in Australia 1788-1870

Index of personnel prepared from the payrolls. Prior to 1820 Australians and British were recruited into the locally based military units, after 1820 troops were generally recruited from England & Ireland and it is not possible to identify Australian recruits. Some records include the name of ship of arrival or departure. Significant number of troops arrived as escorts on convict transports. Mounted Police were commenced by the British Army (Marines & NSW Corps) as mounted troops tasked to carry out police duties.

Includes name, age, sex and locality of households, excludes military regiments, available from S.A. Archives.

Set of engraved maps, includes list of sheet names, date of map where known, and alphabetical index of sheet names with modern equivalents where appropriate.

Divorce Index Victoria 1861-1900

Records are held by the Supreme Court, need to have a name and approximate date and place of divorce to begin search. Index is difficult to use as it is divided into 3 sections - One: earliest files from Supreme Court, Two: files proved in Ecclesiastical Court, Three: files proved in Supreme Court.

Immigration to Victoria lists and indexes 1852-1923

Includes name, title, sex, age, some nationalities, arrival date, ship name, lists of births & deaths at sea, passengers employed on the voyage, ship officers, and fiche reference to relevant passenger list. Records tend to vary considerably from ship to ship depending on whether they are assisted or unassisted (Assisted - passengers financed by government, church or businesses, information can include name, occupation, country of origin, religion, age, literacy, name of person employing the immigrant on arrival. Unassisted - name, occupation, country of origin, age, sometimes marital status).

Records before civil registrations have only the barest information, often births for one family are grouped/registered together. Mistakes often occurred on certificates, always check with other sources. S.A. parish records began 1836, civil registrations in 1842; Tas. parish records from 1803, civil began 1838; Vic. parish records from 1837, civil began 1853; W.A. parish records from 1829, civil began 1841; N.T. records began in 1870; N.S.W. parish records from 1788, civil & compulsory records began in 1856.

Index of assisted immigrants (into Tasmania) 1841-1889

Government assistance began in 1831, little information before then. Assisted records are incomplete, includes those who came to Tasmania under various schemes, many dispersed to other colonies.

Index of unassisted immigrants (into Tasmania) 1829-1865

Indexes to Maritime Board records, lists of passenger names who arrived in Tasmania, and continued on to another port, boarded a vessel for departure from Hobart. Ships from overseas, Australian or Tasmanian ports. Convict transports usually have detailed information.

Index to emigrants from Hamburg 1860-1869

8,881 emigrants listed with the name of the ship, year of departure and passenger number. More information is available from the original volumes.

International Genealogical Index

World wide index of more than 147 million names of deceased who lived mainly between 1500 and 1875. Mormon records of parish registers, marriage and probate records, census returns, dedds, land grants, and cemetery records. Most records are extracted from birth, baptism and marriage records. Names are listed under countries, does not hold many Australian entries - most in Great Britain. Is often the initial step in overseas research, is not useful to the beginner

Originally published in 2 vols by T.W.H. Leavitt and W.D. Lilburn. Has general history of the Colony, information about its buildings, industry and its people. Extensive potted biographies. Included are almost 200 illus.

Port Phillip and Victoria Directories 1839-1867

Comprises the earliest directories of the Port Phillip district and of various towns and regions in Victoria from 1839 to 1869 (39 volumes). An index to towns and regions with dates and locations, and a chronological listing of the directories are included.

Port Phillip Government Gazette 1843-1851

These were issued weekly and bound in annual volumes, with indexes. They include much more than government generated information-lists of absconders, insolvents, impounded animals, letters waiting to be claimed etc; advertisements by local trades & craftsmen, situations vacant and wanted as well as notices concerning crown land, depasturing licences, regulations of the Government etc. Lists land grants, land sales, appointments of civil officers, JPs & police.

Probate Index Victoria 1841-1992

Information in the indexes varies. It includes names, surnames, occupation, date of death, last residence, deceased estates, and a reference number. 1841-1899 index classifies grant as 'P' or 'A' probated wills contents were transcribed into Will Books, administered wills will not be found in Will Books. PRO holds some Will Books. Useful for people overseas, but with property in Australia when they died, often mentions family relationships, many people die without leaving a will.

Commercial business directory includes streets, trade & professions, banks & companies, societies & institutions, government & officials, and municipal & colonial directories. When an entry for a person disappears from the directory, it may be a guide to their time of death.

Victoria electoral roll 11.1.1994

Includes name, address and occupation, records residence rather than ownership. Women voted from 1908.

Wise's Victorian Post Office Directories 1884-1900

Towns section with street directories, alphabetical section - names with colony of Victoria, trades section - arranged by trade and calling. A pastoral and agricultural portion lists station owners, vignerons, dairies, etc.
